An Interesting Time to be a Canadian

Writer's picture: Tim Morton, CFATim Morton, CFA

It's time for Canada to consider it's future. We live next door to a giant. A giant that is usually calm and thoughtful. But on occasion it strikes out at it's most reliable friend.

Does Canada remain passive and hope the threat passes. Perhaps the giant decides there is a more attractive prey to go after (Panama / Greenland?).

What is needed most is a thoughtful reflection by Canadians of what Canadians want to strive for as a country. Internally we have so many conflicting interests.

  • Economic cartels within Canada force residents to pay above world prices for dairy.

  • Inter-provincial tariffs create substantial inefficiencies.

  • Provinces threaten to leave confederation

  • Canada has an abundance of natural resources along with a small population. The creation of wealth would be staggering if we sailed in the same direction. Education, housing, healthcare could be provided at a top level, simply by taking what the world needs, out of the ground. So simple to achieve, but in the recent past not politically acceptable.

Until Canadians decide what is truly best, for their own interests they leave this great country exposed. The upcoming federal election actually comes at opportune time. Time to make a decision on Canada's future.

regards, Tim
